Goodbye Vincent, Hello Leo!
03 June, 2013
Interpretation of fine art is always a contentious issue due to conflicting views and understanding. Photoshop has managed to add a whole new layer to conflict and interpretation. The graphics editing programme gives people the opportunity to build upon and edit originals to create something altogether unique, yet still very much the same.
An online competition has prompted people to use Photoshop to add some famous faces to classic masterpieces. Vincent van Gogh’s self portrait no longer shows the impressionist painter’s bold self depiction, but rather the face of the Titanic heart throb, Leonardo Dicaprio. The Photoshop whizz has even adopted the painting style of Van Gogh when imposing Leo onto the bright background. Similarly Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring can now be found but with Jonny Depp instead sporting a pearl.
These edited pictures should be taken with a pinch of salt, as something humorous and incomparable with the artistic talent lying behind the original masterpieces. Nevertheless, they themselves can be interpreted in their own way; perhaps an attempt to show how respected figures and icons have transformed over the years?
